Three Peaks Challenge 2008
Through the generous sponsorship of hundreds of people, around £6,000 has been raised for the building of a new classroom at Emmaus.
The almost complete team ready to head north! From left to right: Geoff Wells, Steve Walter, Jonathan Munday, Jonathan Gulliford, Andrew Stone and Kevin Wiltshire. (Phil Lucas was being picked up en route)
One of our Sponsors wrote this very touching little poem: They climbed through snow and rain Three Peaks they did in spite of pain Their burden was the children’s hearts That’s why they nobly did their part To build a school another day That other kids might know the way To live as God intends us to And show to others He is true.
The whole idea came from Phil Lucas who suggested the Three Peaks as a less demanding alternative to cycling Lands End to John o'Groats which another parent had suggested. The idea grew over time and as a core of parents and supporters got behind the idea, it took shape.
And so on June 19th 2008 at 8.45am, 6 climbers and a driver headed for Ben Nevis. Here's a flavour of what happened
Phil looks confident - Kevin less so. Looking east up the Great Glen Battling across snowfields on the Ben!
The Emmaus Tea-towel atop the Ben The beautiful Glen Nevis Now struggling with lunch!
Glencoe was stunning as we headed south - then so was the Lake District It's 8.15pm and time to go climbing again
Evening view of Wasdale Water Scafell topped with cloud The towel comes out again in the gathering gloom!
A genuine midnight feast! 6.15am on Saturday in Snowdonia... ...and we're not alone!!!!!
We did get a view going up Snowdon... ...but just cloud & rain at the top! Drowned rats or what?
To give you an idea of what was involved, here's the timetable of our achievement:
Friday 20th June 6.15am - start climbing Ben Nevis 11.15am - finish climbing Ben Nevis 8.15pm - start climbing Scafell Pike 11.15pm - finish climbing Scafell Pike
Saturday 21st June 6.15am - start climbing Snowdon 9.58am - finish climbing Snowdon
Total Time taken from start to finish - 27 hours 43 minutes
More facts and figures The minibus covered 1246 miles - mostly driven by Kevin Wiltshire The climbers walked 16-17 miles, but it was all either up or down!
